The public in Wiltshire is being urged by police to look out for the signs of exploitation in their community.

Det Supt Ben Mant said: “Modern slavery and human trafficking is an abhorrent crime that is happening in our county and it remains a force priority.

“It is sometimes easy to think that because we don’t have coastal borders that this doesn’t impact Wiltshire and is not our problem, but child trafficking and exploitation is bigger than just immigration offences.

“Unfortunately, this does happen on our doorstep and exploitation, especially of children, is often happening in plain sight and comes in many guises.

“We all have a responsibility to remain vigilant and can identify the signs and protect victims.

“As a result of the Covid pandemic, we have seen a decline in the reporting of incidents of this nature and would encourage the public to remain vigilant and report anything they see that raises a concern.

“If something doesn’t look right, then it probably isn’t. Be curious. Your gut reaction will often be right and if you feel unsure about a situation, especially involving children, then call us on 101 and we will always investigate.

He added: “I cannot emphasise enough the collective responsibility that we all have in tackling this.”

While the signs of slavery and trafficking can be hard to identify, the following signs could indicate a situation of child exploitation that you can be aware of:

• The child may have mood swings, including being angry, upset or withdrawn

• The child may show signs of inappropriate sexual behaviour

• They may be dressed inappropriately for their age

• They may have inappropriate relationships including friends much older than they are

• The child may go missing at night or weekends and may not be clear about their whereabouts

• They may not attend school

• The child may have gifts, presents or expensive items which they cannot explain

• Keep an eye out for children who may be out in public places unaccompanied by an adult

• Is the child in a position that you wouldn’t expect to see a child?

If you are concerned that a child may be a potential victim, or you feel suspicious about a situation that is potentially exploitative, you can call Wiltshire Police on 101.

If you believe a person is being trafficked and is in immediate danger, you should call 999 straight away.
