Staff at a Chirk shop are organising a charity golf day in aid of one of the UK’s well-known children’s charities.

The staff at the Spar Store are looking to raise money for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) with the event which takes place at Mile End Golf Club this November.

Teams of four will play an 18-hole Texas Scramble, while other activities will be available on the day.

One of the event organisers, Matt Lee, said: “Our Spar, which is an A.F. Blakemore & Son Ltd store, has NSPCC as a charity partner.

“The work they do at the minute is even more prominent because of the situation around Covid and more children being stuck at home during lockdown.

“Some of them won’t have had lives like others while being home during lockdown, and NSPCC will have helped many.

“The work they do is so important, and I feel it is unrecognised a lot of the time.

“Lockdown has been an opportunity to sit back and reflect on certain things, and that’s one of those things.

“I think it makes you appreciate things a lot more.”

As well as the opportunity to take part in the 18-hole match as a team, there will be a pitch and putt competition as well as a raffle.

It is the first time the Spar will be holding a golf day in the area.

Matt said: “This is the first time we’re doing this.

“We thought with everything going on and the restrictions in place, we felt teams of four would allow us to maintain social distancing.

“We’ve added some fun events and tried to make some fun competitions like pitching and putting for people to have a go at.

“There is also going to be a raffle on the day, so we are looking for people and businesses to donate raffle prizes if possible.

“We are just hoping to raise as much as we can for a worthy cause, and we’re happy to have Mile End Golf Club working with us to make it a bigger event.”

Matt has encouraged people to support the event.

He added: “Even if people don’t want to take part in the 18-hole game, we would like people to come along on the day and have a go at the pitching and putting or take part in the raffle.

“We’ll also be having a competition for the best-dressed golfer on the day so people can get involved with that too.”

There are 12 tee times available with a cost of £80 per team.

The event will take place on Friday, November 6.
