HOLLIES Tennis Club in Whitchurch held their Covid-19-friendly Club Championships earlier this month.

Not wanted to be deterred by the pandemic, the Tarporley Road-based club organised the tournament to fit with appropriate restrictions.

Rather than running the full programme of events, just the ladies and men's singles were played with the re-introduction of a plate competition.

With social distancing, hand sanitising and track and trace the club were able to welcome spectators who enjoyed a rare opportunity to watch live tennis in the warm sunshine.

The Ladies Singles 2020 Champion was Hannah Jones who beat long time rival and last year's champion Claire Snaith 6-4 6-2.

The Men's Singles 2020 Champion was first time winner Harrison Gwilt who beat Chris Jackson, a previous winner, 7-6 6-0.

Ladies plate singles winner was Pam Dodd who beat Rachel Bailey 6-0 6-4

And the men's plate winner was Lloyd Chesters who beat Tony Crabb 6-2 6-4.

To finish the afternoon the competitors played a fun mixed doubles match.

Chris and Hannah were winners over Harrison and Claire. Lloyd and Rachel were winners against Pam and Tony.

The Matches were umpired by the club captains, Jane Rylands and Mike Shrimplin with club members as line judges.

Club Chairman Jon Gilbert presented the trophies and congratulated the winners and all the club members for making the day a success in the current exceptional circumstances.

The club lady of the year was Sandra Logan.

The club man of the year was Alan Scutt.

The veterans annual tournament has yet to be completed.
