Two town councillors in Oswestry have been doing their bit to rid the town of litter as lockdown restrictions are lifted.

Councillors John Price and Les Maguire spent some time at the skateboard park in Eastern Oswestry, where they had noticed an increase in litter.

Armed with two litter pickers and some bin bags, the pair cleaned up rubbish which had been left on the floor near and on the park, as well as an office chair which was left there.

Cllr Maguire said between them, they managed to fill two bin bags with rubbish, and is now calling on those using the park to take rubbish home with them, or dispose of it at nearby bins.

He said: “Due to an increase in localism since the Covid-19 pandemic, we have noticed an increase in litter around the park

“We want to see our parks and countryside left clean for the next person to use and enjoy, because localism is here to stay and that’s great for local economy.

“We felt we needed to get our hands dirty and get the job done.

“We would ask that people please take their rubbish home with them or use the bins located around the park.

“It’s not because they are full, because we have been down to check and on two occasions they were empty.

“We will keep coming to the park and check and if needs be, clean up the area again, but let’s hope that now its clean people will keep it this way for others to enjoy.”

Rubbish left at the park follows an incident near the river in Croeswylan Lane which Oswestry Safer Neighbourhood Team reported on Twitter last week.
