Three Chirk schoolchildren have received invites to the Houses of Parliament as a reward for their efforts to reduce the amount of litter in their town.

Ava Earl-Jones, aged five, Maisie Morgan, aged 10 and Ollie Morgan aged eight have been working hard to keep Chirk tidy during lockdown by walking around with litter pickers to ensure rubbish is picked up.

As a result, their efforts have been recognised by Clwyd South MP Simon Baynes, who has invited the children to Parliament, once lockdown is over.

Each of the children were sent a letter from Mr Baynes who thanked them personally for the hard work they have done for their community.

His letter read: “I wanted to say a massive well done for all your hard work picking up litter in Chirk.

“I heard that you noticed there was a lot of litter when you were out walking and that you went out to pick it all up.

“I’m really grateful for what you’ve done to help keep our area clean and safe for everyone to enjoy.

“It was a very kind thing for you to do and it helps us all to be proud of where we live by keeping our streets clean and tidy.”

The Ysgol-Y-Waun pupils began cleaning up the town’s streets during lockdown after spending more time out walking during their one-hour of daily exercise.

Together they began litter picking after they became worried about the effects litter can have on animals and other aspects of nature in the area.

Mr Baynes also commended them for making a positive difference locally and said they should be very proud of what they have done.

Ava’s mother, Sian Earl Jones, said the three children came up with the idea of clearing the litter themselves.

She added that they were very excited to receive their letters.

She said: “I could not be prouder of these three little superstars getting their very special surprise letters recognising the work they have been doing around Chirk.

“They are very excited about their invitation to the Houses of Parliament.”

Sian added that the three children are now helping a younger fourth member to carry out litter picking duties in the area too.
