An OSWESTRY-BASED charity is appealing for volunteers to step forward as board members and supporters as it starts to rebuild its work in the “new normal” of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Ethos Group, based in Oswestry, helps people with life-changing physical disabilities to live independent lives by providing them with transitional housing and a support team of advisors to help them find a permanent future home.

Its three wheelchair adapted bungalows have been in complete lockdown since March and clients have had contact with only a small team of Ethos support workers.

“Thankfully we have avoided any cases of Covid-19 but the lack of social interaction has been very difficult for many of our clients,” said chief executive Fae Dromgool.

“Now Ethos is easing the restrictions and we are looking for volunteers to help its clients feel connected with the outside world again.

“Obviously the coronavirus restrictions will still apply with social distancing and hand washing but we have got to the stage now where we can invite visitors back to the bungalows.

“We are looking for anyone in the area who is prepared to come in and use some of their spare time to enhance the life of someone else.

“It could be as simple as having a coffee and a chat, helping with the gardening or simply watching a film with a client.”

Volunteers can also help the charity by becoming a trustee on its board.

The role involves attending bi-monthly board meetings and giving up around three hours a month to oversee the work of the charity.

“We would love to hear from anyone who feels they could contribute to the work we do by becoming a trustee,” added fae.

“We have a very friendly team but we would like to bring in new trustees with expertise in finance, IT, social care or housing development to widen our breadth of knowledge.”

She added that Ethos was also currently recruiting a part-time independent living advisor to work as part of the support team.
