Oswestry Rugby Club’s chairman has set the first team a target of achieving two promotions in the next three seasons after they joined the Midlands League.

Warren Howell wants the club to push up the pyramid in the Midlands League as quickly as they can, under the guidance of new head coach Jordan Davies.

The club was previously competing in the Lancashire/Cheshire Premier Division Two, and finished third when the season was cut short because of COVID-19.

Warren hopes the change of league, coupled with the signing of a new head coach, can see the club head in a more positive direction.

He said: “Jordan organises one of the Heart of Wales Sevens tournaments, he’s coached Llanidloes for a number of years and he’s a young coach with big aspirations.

“We’re very pleased with him coming in and we think he will bring a lot of fresh ideas.

“When I said to him about our aims, he looked at the leagues and looked at past fixtures of ours and our squad, and as long as he gets the commitment of the players, there’s no reason why we can’t achieve them.”

Jordan guided Llanidloes to nine trophies in seven seasons, and after discussions with the club, Warren hopes he can help to bring some of that success to Oswestry.

Warren said: “We’ve been messing about in the Northern Leagues for a few years, not knowing when our games would be played at times, and now we’re heading back to the Midlands leagues.

“We’re going into one of the lowest leagues they have because obviously we have to start afresh, but with a new coach and a few lads coming back from injuries and university, I want two promotions in three seasons.

“It’s something we’ve talked at length about with the new coach and others at the club, and nobody sees why we can’t achieve that.

“We feel that more regular fixtures will enable us to have more continuity with results and performances.

“We’ll have more routine playing every weekend, and we’ll also be entered into different RFU cup fixtures which we haven’t been in during the past few seasons, so there’s lots of positivity there.”

Oswestry Rugby Club is also on the search for volunteers to help across the many age groups at the club and to help on its committee.

The club is also looking for sponsorship and is looking to offer packages to any interested businesses.
