SHROPSHIRE Council has moved to warn residents in the county that there are scam emails and text messages pretending to be from one of its departments.
The council tweeted out on Friday that it had received reports from residents that texts or emails had been sent from scammer pretending to be the council tax team at Shirehall.
Staff there have moved quickly to alert residents to the potential scam.
They said: "Emails/text messages currently being sent out to customers from what looks to be Shropshire Council’s council tax team asking for bank details, suggesting that they're due a refund.
"These text messages and emails are not being sent by Shropshire Council and are fraudulent."
Anyone who believes they have been defrauded should contact West Mercia Police on 101.
If you have concerns over your council tax or on any issues, then contact Shropshire Council on 0345 678 9000.
