A SOCIAL enterprise in Chirk is one of only three of its kind in Wales to have been recognised in a prestigious top 100 list across the UK.

Glyn Wylfa, in Castle Road, has been named in the top 100 in the NatWest SE100 Index for 2020, and was set to be recognised for the feat at the SE100 Social Business Awards, but the COVID-19 pandemic meant the event has been cancelled.

Director of Glyn Wylfa, Brian Colley, believes the news is great for the town of Chirk.

He said: “It’s very pleasing overall, and it’s great for Chirk to have somewhere which is listed in the top 100.

“We have long served the community and we still are even during these unprecedented times.

“We recently received a really nice letter from our MP Simon Baynes to congratulate us on all the work we have been doing such as delivering meals during the lockdown.

“As well as delivering meals, we’ve been doing all we can to loo after the vulnerable people in the community.

“It’s great to see the number of people and businesses doing their bit in Chirk at the moment.”

Brian helped to put together Glyn Wylfa’s application to be considered for a spot in the top 100 list.

He added: “Our application had to be very in depth and looked at where we’ve been and where we are today, the protocols we use for supporting the community, and how we identify the needs of people in the community.

“I think social enterprises are extremely important, they seem to really be emerging now.

“We like to use the term ‘profit making, not profit taking’ – meaning we distribute as much profit as we can for re-investment within the community for facilities, sports and charities.

“We will continue to do that for as long as we are able to.”

The site has tenants in offices, as well as a café which has been supporting the community throughout the pandemic.

Brian believes the support of the community and tenants, as well as the hard work of the staff members, has led to the recent recognition.

“We are extremely grateful for everyone who supports us, our tenants and all of our staff,” he said.

“We have 13 members of staff, with some of them currently furloughed.

“They are all brilliant and we are extremely proud of all of them.”
