A SCHOOLGIRL from near Oswestry has used her time self-isolating to make a poster highlighting the importance of social-distancing during the current pandemic.

Abigail Nolan produced the colourful and informative poster over the course of two mornings, and is looking to spread the word to help fight against coronavirus.

Her mother, Julie Anne Nolan, is a teacher and is also currently self-isolating at home with her daughter.

Julie was very impressed with Abigail, after the 10-year-old showed her initiative to research the virus and get the word out to people about how to slow its spread.

Julie said: “Abigail was doing some schoolwork but I could see she was losing a bit of interest, so I suggested she made a poster to spread the word about how important it is to stay at home during the crisis.

“So she went away to research what she wanted to know all by herself and made some notes, and then she started putting together this poster.

“I didn’t really notice how much effort she was putting in because I was trying to organise my schoolwork as well, but it took her two mornings and I was very impressed with it.

“She asked if I could help her to spread the word, so we took a picture and posted it on Facebook, and it has had a great reaction.”

Abigail is a pupil at Weston Rhyn Primary School, which was one of the first schools in the area to close because of the virus.

Julie believes it is important to educate children about the situation in the most sensitive way possible.

She explained: “As adults we’ll often talk about the current situation, and Abigail had said a few times ‘let’s not talk about it anymore’.

“So I thought if she found out bits that she wanted to know about it on her own, it might be better for her and help her to learn more about it.

“As a 10-year-old she is quite sensitive, because you are at that age, so I think it helped by letting her research what she wanted to.”
