WREXHAM'S MP has urged the Welsh Government to put a moratorium on planning applications during the current coronavirus outbreak

Sarah Atherton said that it was not possible for communities to be properly consulted on planning applications affecting them.

In a letter to First Minister Mark Drayford, she said: “Planning matters are always contentious issues as the national need for more affordable housing almost always comes into conflict with local needs to reflect the characteristics of particular communities and honour local plans. Therefore it is quite proper that consultations involve those within the affected communities once an application is made.

“However, I am concerned that we are continuing with ‘business as normal’ at a time when people cannot be expected to engage properly with such consultations. Individuals and entire communities are presently, quite correctly, focused on protecting themselves and their loved ones and so are unable to give proper attention to matters which could drastically alter the character of their villages and towns forever.

“I therefore request the you put a moratorium on all planning matters in Wales until this crisis has passed, so that our communities are not afflicted with developments which, in ordinary times, would never be accepted or approved.”

Offering her support on the matter, Ms Atherton added: “Please would you give this matter your urgent attention and I remain, as ever, ready to offer any assistance to make it happen.”
