Morda Table Tennis Club held its fifth championships earlier this month, with 50 per cent more entrants than last year.

Players at the club fought for the five trophies on offer in the Open Singles, Handicap, Juniors, Doubles and Consolation Singles.

In the Open Singles, most matches went the way of the seedings with all the fancied players making it through to the quarter-final stages.

The final saw the two top seeds in action. Ali Kheradnejad, the number one seed, was up against number two seek, Bozena Swietlicka in what was a very even match.

Sweitlicka eventually won the tie in three straight sets, 11-7, 11-9, 11-6.

In the Handicap event, matches were played over two sets, with an added handicap.

The final was again between Kheradnejad and Swietlicka but there was no repeat of the singles final, with Kheradnejad taking the match 30 points to 15.

The Junior event saw a close encounter between Austin Hibbert and Ethan Shackleton in the final.

The difference between the players was Hibbert’s ability to counter-hit Shackleton’s big forehand shots.

Hibbert retained his title from last year in straight sets, 11-8, 11-7.

For the Doubles, it was back to handicaps, and drawn pairings, with the teams of Chris Walker and Hibbert, and Chris Kilvert and Robert Pursall, reaching the final.

In a close match, Pursall and Kilvert took the first set, before Walker and Hibbert took the second.

Kilvert and Pursall were able to win the deciding set and take the title.

The Consolation singles was for first-round match losers from the Open Singles.

Hibbert reached the final with a win over Pursall, and faced Briony Rann in the final, with Rann winning 49-27.
