The mayor of Oswestry has lamented the loss of Carphone Warehouse to the town after it was announced the business is closing all of its stores.

Up to 3,000 jobs are being axed after Dixons Carphone – the owner – revealed plans to shut all 531 of its mobile phone stores across the country last week.

This includes the Oswestry branch, which has a base in Bailey Street.

Councillor John Price admitted the loss of the business could be a blow towards Oswestry, especially during the shutdown caused by the coronavirus outbreak and hopes other business can stay around Oswestry.

“It’s disappointing that it’s closed and it’s a bit of a blow for the town,” said Cllr Price.

“It could be the tip of the iceberg, especially in these hard times.

“It’s always going to be a bit of a blow for towns like Oswestry when a major name pulls out and I hope businesses can assure the people of the future.”
