Work has begun on an infamous ‘rat run’ after years of campaigning to halve the speed limit.

Weston Road has been the subject of a long-running campaign, lead by Joyce Barrow, the councillor for Shropshire and Oswestry Rural Parish Council, to get the speed limit lowered from 60mph to 30mph and improve the safety for nearby residents and businesses.

Shropshire Council started the work on Monday, March 9 from the junction at Maesbury Road to Weston Lane, and from Weston Lane to the junction of B5069 in Morda which sees traffic lights along the road as they add 30mph speed limit, environmental weight limit and all associated signage, road markings and vegetation clearance.

Cllr Barrow said she was delighted that after many years of campaigning, their work is being recognised.

“We’ve spent years campaigning for this road to have a 30mph speed limit,” she said.

“Residents Joan Collins and Thelma Simnell have been outstanding with this campaign, they’ve worked so hard so get our concerns listened to.

“Over the years we’ve had concerns of accidents, Mike Philbin of Weston Pools has had trees ripped up so he’s had to repair damage to his business – it’s all added up to the parish council and residents really pushing to get the changes made.

“I’m delighted this work has started and hopefully it’ll make Weston a safer place. “

Cllr Barrow added that she hopes drivers will adhere to the speed limits after so many years of campaigning.

The work is scheduled to end on Tuesday, March 17.
