OSWESTRY Town Council has recommended that its Solar Working Group is to disband after the application to the Rural Communities Energy Fund was not successful.

The council applied for funding to the Rural Communities Energy Fund (RCEF) to undertake a study to see if the possibility of a solar community energy company was feasible.

However the application was not successful, with the council being offered some support to better understand the reasons why and guidance as to a potential re-submission.

The Midlands Energy Hub, who offer the grant, provided feedback and advice and while it was a 'thought-provoking and interesting insight', councillors felt it did not offer much hope for grant funding.

The feedback is set to be heard at Oswestry Town Council’s Amenities Committee meeting tonight (Wednesday) at the Guildhall.

Part of the report said: “The Hub stated that they wish to fund projects which are looking at a range of technology and which are more ambitious and creative about what they want to achieve through the project.”

The feasibility of potential solar panels on the Powis Hall will be overseen by the Markets and Town Centre Committee, while the Climate Change Group will develop an action plan in line with the council’s commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Elsewhere in the meeting councillors are set to receive updates on the Oswestry cemetery and its day to day operations as well as receiving a report from the Town Clerk regarding the visitor figures for the Oswestry Visitor and Exhibition Centre.

Councillors will also hear from the Cae Glas Management Group after its meeting at the end of last month, where they discussed two responses to the invitation to trade at Cae Glas Park and arrangements for the 2020 Oswestry Balloon Carnival.
