A HOCKEY club in Oswestry will be hosting an open day to celebrate its recent success.

Oswestry Ladies Hockey Club have experienced a change in fortune after a season of struggles turned into success for the side.

After struggling to bring together enough players for their fixtures at times last season, the club have been able to recruit more players and are now looking at the possibility of gaining promotion.

At one point the club was close to folding, but began inviting juniors from local schools to take part in workshops with the club; and since then the number of players has seen a rise.

With an increase in the size of their squad, the club have enjoyed success on the pitch, with promotion in their sights and just four more games to play.

They have proved to be one of the league’s strongest sides, and have picked up some huge results including 8-0 and 9-0 victories in some of their fixtures.

The interest in the women’s side of the club has also spread to the men’s side, allowing the club to put together a men’s team which will be ready to start competing next season.

To celebrate their successes, the club will be holding a families day to allow people to visit the club and have a go at hockey on Saturday, March 28 at 1pm at Oswestry School.

It will give visitors a chance to take on the ladies team and the new men’s team in a mixed match.

All funds raised on the day will be donated to the West Midlands Air Ambulance who have been involved with one of the players in the past.
