A CHIRK manufacturing plant has sponsored outdoor learning canopies for a local primary school.

As part of the Welsh school curriculum, foundation phase pupils are expected to learn both inside and outside of the classroom.

As additions to the school building, classroom canopies are not currently funded by the local authority, so headteacher at Ysgol y Waun John Roberts contacted Kronospan for help last summer.

Mr Roberts said: “I would like to thank Kronospan for their support for this project which we began over the summer holidays last year. We did not have the financial resources for what is a very costly bespoke requirement. They are now completed and have been a great addition for all the children attending our Chapel Lane site - we have expanded their existing classroom space, providing an all-weather solution to outdoor learning.”

Kronospan has had a long-standing relationship with Ysgol Y Waun and have sponsored many different projects over the years including laptops, chromebooks and audio–visual technologies.

Chairman Mike McKenna said, “With a significant proportion of our workforce living and bringing up their families in Chirk we always try to help Ysgol Y Waun when we can. So when John approached us last June we were pleased to be able to help with this project. The spaces have clearly added an additional and exciting dimension to teaching which both the children and the teachers are now enjoying.”

Outdoor learning and outdoor play areas can help to develop skills and enhance pupils’ learning experience.
