SHROVE Tuesday will be celebrated in Mold with its annual Pancake Races

Mold Pancake Races are organised by Mold Town Council and Cittaslow Mold and entry to race and watch is free, with pans, pancakes and aprons provided for the runners.

The rules are very simple – people can enter the event on the day and take part in a team of four that will run in a relay for the pancake races – each person, wearing an apron, runs one length of Daniel Owen Square, tossing and catching their pancake three times.

They then hand over their pan, pancake and apron to the next person in their team. Aprons have to be tied on or runners will be disqualified!

Teams will be timed and the fastest adult team and children’s team, which has tossed their pancakes the correct number of times, will win a prize.

The event is being sponsored for the sixth year by Spavens Sweet Shop and Ice Cream Parlour, based on King Street in Mold.

Over the years the team at Spavens have perfected a batter for the races that makes a pancake strong enough to last four laps of the race.

Co-owner Alan Spaven said: “We are very honoured to sponsor Mold annual Pancake Day races, it is a great community event and brings people of all ages in the town together for a fun afternoon.”

Spavens are also donating the prizes for both the fastest children and adults.

As with many community activities, the Pancake Races rely on volunteers to help on the day and thanks go to the stewards who will include members of Mold Town Council and residents.

Jane Evans, events and community engagement officer at Mold Town Council, said: “This will be our fifteenth year of holding the pancake day races. The event is a well-established firm favourite in the town’s events calendar and it is great to see many of the local businesses and schools, who regularly participate, having a ‘flippin’ great time! So whether you are taking part or just coming along to cheer on our race goers, we look forward to seeing you on the day”.

The race, now in its the fifteenth year, will be held in the Daniel Owen Square on Tuesday, February 25 starting at 2pm.

Registration starts at 1.30pm on the square and teams can enter throughout the races. Event will end at 3.30pm depending on number of teams.
