AN OSWESTRY man has thanked his teammates and supporters after his rowing team completed the Atlantic crossing.

The group of four, which included Oswestry-born Ian Davies, arrived in Antigua on Friday after completing the 3,000-mile journey from the Canaries.

They were attempting the crossing as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. It took the group 50 days and 19 minutes to reach their destination.

After arriving in the Caribbean, Ian and his team were greeted by family and friends as they began celebrating their achievement.

Ian left a message on the Atlantic Mavericks Facebook page as he reflected on the challenge.

His post read: "It was three years ago and this was just an idea. We had no money, no team, no boat and we didn't even row, and here we are today in Antigua.

"The wind, the waves, and the weather of the ocean deemed us worthy of a safe passage.

"It is therefore with humility that we accept our crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. A lot was learned but equally we realise there is a lot more to be learned.

"Our crew, the Atlantic Mavericks, were magnificent, but without a doubt the star of our crossing was our boat, Miss Daisy. She was outstanding.

"To all our fellow rowers yet to complete be safe.

"I now have a date with a beautiful lady and an ice cold beer, so, Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2019, thanks for the ride, it was awesome."

The four-strong team are all ex-armed forces workers, and have a combined age of 232 years – an average age of 58.

Ian's team rowed to raise money for Myeloma UK, The Royal British Legion and the 353 charity.
