THE people of Kendal are absolutely right to oppose the destruction of mature trees.

They are part of the town and they provide shelter for birds and the joy of colour and blossom.

The practice is not common to Kendal alone. In one year 110,000 trees have been axed in the UK: more than 8,000 in Newcastle, 4,400 in Edinburgh and 3,500 in Sheffield, to quote just a few.

Between three and seven billion trees are axed per year worldwide.
