A CHARITY event held by Oswestry Bridge Club on Saturday helped to raise more than £500 for charity.

More than 40 club members supported the event in aid of The Samaritans and raised £535.

Samaritans chairman Jane Langdon reported that in her area alone 120 volunteers deal with about 30,000 calls per year, plus texts and face-to-face meetings.

As well as working with support groups and fundraising events, while recent initiatives include outreach programmes to prisons, schools, job centres, and businesses.

Oswestry bridge players have, in the last year, raised in excess of one thousand pounds in support of local, national and international charities in areas such as mental health, cancer care and research, and children’s welfare.

Oswestry Bridge Club is one of the most thriving of its kind in the area with approaching 100 members and has an active teaching programme for introducing people to the game.
