The owner of one of Oswestry's most iconic shops, The Clubhouse, has thanked all of his customers after the weekend's closure.

Martin Britten has owned the shop, which sits on the corner of Oswald Road and Leg Street, for nearly 40 years but is heading into retirement after the weekend.

The shop has been holding a close down sale since Martin announced the closure back in October 2019, and he thanked all those people who called in to say goodbye or make a bargain purchase.

"I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who has come to the shop for many years," he said.

"I have made some great friends over the years.

"This has been my life for 38 years so it's impossible to figure out how many people have come to this shop.

"But they have all been so supportive over the years, and I want to say thanks to the many tradesmen I've used over the years.

"There's so many electricians, plumbers, joiners – all of them.

"I've always enjoyed doing this job – I have been really touched about how many well wishes we've received since we announced we were closing.

"There's been so many cards too so I do really want to thank everyone.

"It's just time to go and retire but I want to say how much of help everyone was."

The shop's online business is set to run until next month to honour orders and then it will be closed.

In October, Martin – who turns 60 this year – said he was looking forward to spending more time with his family after his retirement.
