An Oswestry business owner has found a way to raise money for charity and get around having to pay for a music licence in his store – by celebrating the town's hillfort.

Mike Coppock, who also sits on Oswestry Town Council, is owner of Rowanthorn in Old Chapel Court, a store selling clothing and gifts, specialising in fair trade.

Mike was hit with a bill for playing music in the shop without a licence, but once he realised he could get around by playing music he created himself, he decided to also raise money for the town's Foodbank with the release of a music CD.

"If you've visited Rowanthorn in Oswestry, you'll be familiar with the relaxing background music being played," he said.

"It's created by myself, as I run the shop, as I decided to make my own music after receiving a bill for £430 for the annual licence to play music in public.

"I invested the money instead into upgrading my music software and avoid needing the licence.

"Numerous customers asked about the music and if they could buy it, so I decided to compile a CD of the shop's music. I was previously a club DJ and dance music producer, so I have the tools at hand and the musical background."

Mike admitted that deciding on a title and subject for the CD was not difficult, making the Hillfort the subject.

He added: "I've often wondered about the lives of those who created the hillfort and lived by it more than 2,000 years ago, so each of the 11 tracks has a title relating to the people, rather than the hillfort itself.

"I'm selling the 60-minute CD for £7.99, and donating £1 from each one to the Foodbank, connecting the needs and problems of people's lives to the here and now.

"People at that time would have had the same issues that we have, bringing up families, providing shelter and food.

"The music is relaxing, pensive and uplifting, hoping to reflect the variety of feelings and emotions in the lives of those who lived here so long ago, and who left behind their handiwork which is the hillfort."
