An OLD ELLESMERIAN and Enterprise Rent-A-Car staff member went the extra mile on a challenge when he took part in a charity run for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) with a team of runners from Ellesmere College.

Running with staff, former students and parents, Jonny Wells took on the challenge of the ‘School to Snowdon Run’ that takes runners on a relay race covering 75 miles from the gates of the College to the base of Snowdon.

Jonny, who works at Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Shrewsbury, was not only delighted when he completed the challenge but then received a cheque from Enterprise HQ for £1,000 – a match promise made by the company for the amount already raised by the staff and former students.

The cheque was presented to members of the College team by Jonny and will be used for heart screening sessions at schools and centres throughout the North West by C.R.Y-UK at www.c-r-y.org.uk/, which highlights the risk of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) in 14-35 year olds.

In total the final sum raised by the run was more than £2,000 which enables C.R.Y to screen over 40 young hearts to highlight any abnormalities that can then be referred to a specialist.

Jonny said: “It was an amazing challenge and I’m proud to have been a part of it – all the runners and support team showing huge levels of commitment prior to the event in training and preparation, and then on the day itself.

“The weather was also good which helped! I am really proud of everyone for completing the run and we made it to the Pen-Y-Pass car park at the base of Snowdon in just under 13 hours."

Olivia Beckett, team captain and external relations officer, said: “I am delighted with the amount we have raised for C.R.Y and want to thank the staff at Enterprise Rent-A-Car for their incredibly generous donation.

“It all goes towards saving young lives which is something very important to us at the college.

“We are looking forward to completing another challenge next year and hope to beat our goal of £2.000!"
