A SECONDARY school in Ellesmere welcomed a group of League One footballers to open its new all-weather football pitch.

Staff, students and members of the Governing Body at Lakelands Academy were both delighted and thrilled to be joined by Shrewsbury Town Football Club and others for the grand opening of the new pitch.

Players from the club and their coach participated in a coaching session with the Year 9 football team and afterwards took part in a question and answer session.

Following a successful funding bid, awarded in 2018, the construction of a full-size all weather pitch was completed in Spring of 2019.

At a cost of £570,000 this superb, fully-lit, multi-sports surface is proving to be a valuable asset.

Headteacher at the academy, Sophy Bellis, said she is thrilled to have such an excellent facility available.

“The academy is delighted to have received this substantial funding sum. The creation of these excellent sporting facilities has opened up so many opportunities for everyone – from the youngest beginner to the international class athlete and optimises the facilities available for students and the wider community here at Lakelands academy.”
