A HOUSING scheme for vulnerable members of the LGBTQ+ community in Denbighshire is set to launch before Christmas.
Denbighshire County Council (DCC) will provide 24-hour residential support services for 16 to 25-year-olds in the county who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or other sexual identities. The scheme follows Welsh Government-funded research which found LGBTQ+ young people are four times more likely to become homeless than their peers.
The four-bed property is located in Rhyl and will partner with LGBT charity ViVA, homelessness charity Llamau and specialist mental health support providers. Citizen's Advice Denbighshire and Working Denbighshire officers will also be based on-site.
A DCC spokesperson said the council applied for Welsh Government funding after the Llamau task and finish group completed its research.
“This project is in addition to the support provided to all Denbighshire residents who are homeless or are in danger of becoming homeless," the spokesperson said.
The scheme is expected to begin in mid-December
Anyone at risk of becoming homeless can visit the Ask Centre on Water Street in Rhyl to talk with DCC’s homelessness prevention team.
