The mother of an Oswestry man who conquered Africa's Mount Kilimanjaro has admitted her pride at his achievement.

David Jones, 61, grew up in Knockin Heath and Oswestry, as well as attending the town's boys school, but now lives in Switzerland, and he scaled the famous peak, in Tanzania, on the last weekend of October.

Mum Eileen, 83, who raised £600 towards his $4,000 target, admitted she would have given anything to be there with him and thanked everyone who sponsored him.

"I’m the proudest mum in the world," said Eileen.

"He was very ill there but because of all his sponsors, he refused to turn back, completing it.

"He raised all of the money for Leukaemia research, through the company he works for.

"This is out of character for David but someone mentioned it to him last year and he wanted to do it.

"He’s still a fit and active man, he’s still captaining his football team in Switzerland even though he should be resting.

"He’s had so many scrapes and injuries, such as his Achilles but it’s a fantastic achievement.

"This might have given him a taste for more adventure but he definitely won’t be doing this again.

"He was one of 16 that finished, with 10 – all younger – not finishing. I was delighted to raise £600 of his sponsorship.”
