Japanese children made Prince Charles’ Foel-raised harpist feel right at home with a rousing chorus of the Welsh anthem Mae Hen Wlad Fy’n Nhadau.

The Prince of Wales’ official harpist Alis Huws has been touring Japan as part of a cultural programme organised by the international agency of the Arts Council of Wales.

“The whole experience has been amazing,” Alis said.

“The welcome we received was unbelievable, especially in Kitakyushu, the whole city was red with Welsh flags everywhere!”

Alis, a former Ysgol Dyffryn Banw and Caereinion High School pupil, played the harp during a half an hour concert in front of 560 primary school children in Kitakyushu. the southern Japanese city where more than 15,000 people watched Wales’ 2019 Rugby World Cup squad train.

During her tour, the talented harp player performed for Prince Charles and guests including former Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas at the British Ambassador’s Residence in Tokyo to celebrate the links between the UK and Japan.

Alis also played the harp in Oita as part of a cultural programme to strengthen Welsh relations with Japan.

She said: “I was fortunate to perform in Japan for the first time three years ago, so it was a pleasure to return to the country. I’m so grateful to Wales Arts International for their support and for giving me the opportunity to do this tour.”

With a busy few months ahead, Alis said she is looking forward to an afternoon concert with Flautist Carys Gittins in Oriel Davies, Newtown on Sunday, November 24.
