A SIGN language choir, with members from Chirk, could be showcasing their talents on television next year after successful auditions on a popular talent show competition.

Sign of the Times choir, based in Wrexham, took 17 members to the first set of Britain's Got Talent auditions last week in Manchester.

The group of 17 members impressed the judges with their unique take on the song A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman, and progressed to a second audition – they must now wait until later in the year to find out whether they will perform at the live auditions.

Members of the choir perform songs in sign language, while member Libby Prile sings.

Chirk twins, Bethany and Courtney Phillips, make up part of the choir, and have spent the past week celebrating after a successful first audition.

Choir co-ordinator, Paul Harrison, said the prospect of performing on television in front of a live audience is very exciting for the group.

He said: "I want to say well done to all of the choir; I am massively proud of them.

"The work they have put in is unbelievable, and the best thing is that they all enjoy it so much.

"I know the twins spend a lot of their spare time practicing at home because they absolutely love it.

"It's a waiting game for us now to find out whether or not we will take part in the next stage – but it would mean everything to this group."

The choir is an inclusive choir, with some members who are students at St Christopher's School in Wrexham.

It was initially set up by students at the school who wanted to communicate with some of the profoundly deaf pupils.

"Some of the choir members have learning difficulties or disabilities, so we are open to everyone who wishes to join," said Paul.

"I don't think there are many school sign language choirs around like the one we have.

"The children were so so happy with the performance and the feedback on the day.

"It's great for their self-esteem – we couldn't keep them quiet on the bus journey back home and they're still talking about it now; I imagine they will be for some time."

While the choir now faces a wait to find out whether they will feature in the live auditions, they will be keeping themselves busy over the next few months.

Paul added: "We have a lot of bookings in place already over the coming months. No doubt they will all be practicing Christmas songs now."
