Town councillors in Oswestry are set to discuss a possible return to Shropshire Council providing transport for post-19 learners with special educational needs and disabilities.

Earlier this year, plans were announced to remove transport for SEND students, causing uproar across the county with many unhappy with the proposals.

And now Shropshire Council and its Passenger Transport Group – led by Councillor Simon Harris – has re-opened a consultation into re-introducing transport for post-19 SEND students, with councillors in Oswestry being asked to make their comments on the consultation.

The consultation outline states: “The consultation into the proposed introduction of a Post-19 Transport Policy aims to recognise SEND Post-19 learners as adults in education and identify necessary transport needs.

“Shropshire Council actively encourages young adults to participate in education and training, it is expected that the vast majority of adult learners will make their own travel arrangements and meet the cost of those arrangements.

“However, with the introduction of the proposed policy, the council may conclude that it is necessary to make such arrangements for the provision of transport; consequently we anticipate better outcomes for the learner that will aim for or enable a learner to travel and live as independently as possible.”

The consultation, which closes on Friday, October 18, can be found at www.shropshire.gov.uk where visitors can also find out what services are provided to post-19 SEND learners.

The meeting starts at 7pm.
