An OSWESTRY-based fighter had his recent bout voted as the fight of the night by a former World Boxing Association lightweight champion.

Cory Jones, of Maelor Amateur Boxing Club, was in action at a St Johns boxing show in Manchester for a three-round bout with British medallist Bernie Mongan of Bridgewater ABC.

In attendance was former world lightweight champion, Anthony Crolla, as guest of honour.

Jones and Mongon went the distance, with the young Oswestry fighter doing enough to win over the three judges and win by unanimous decision.

The fight prompted a huge response from the crowds in attendance, with the pair receiving a standing ovation.

The plaudits did not stop there however, with Crolla giving the bout the ‘fight of the night’ award.

As a result, Jones was awarded a belt, which has never been claimed by any fighter outside of Manchester before. Jones attended an event on September 21 to receive his belt from English Amateur Boxing Association chairman, John Hart.
