Shropshire councillor Steve Davenport believes a meeting on potential work at the Llynclys was 'very positive' last week.

Councillor Davenport, Shropshire Council’s cabinet member for highways, met with local councillors and Highways England last week and believes there will be action taken.

He also admits his hope that Shropshire Council's plans for the A5 and A483 can tap into money announced by chancellor Sajid Javid for new roads next year.

"The meeting was with councillors from around the Llynclys area as well as Highways and everyone seemed to go away from it happy with developments," he said.

"I'm meeting again this week and I'm requesting that we do more. The A483 is the responsibility of Highways England but the round around it are ours. There's some work to be done and I'm waiting to hear what the details are.

"Everyone went away from the meeting believes something will happen and it was a genuinely positive meeting.

"The chancellor announced that millions of pounds will be spent on roads so we have to make sure we will be bidding for a part of that."

Mr Javid announced a £25 billion investment on Monday at the Conservative Party conference.

Cllr Davenport believes the money could help get two major schemes signed off for Shropshire.

He said he will be putting forward bids for funding for dualling the A5 between Oswestry and Montford Bridge and the A483 Llynclys crossroads.

He added: “This is a welcome announcement from the chancellor and significant investment in the country’s road network.

“I am absolutely on top of our bids for dualling the A5 and safety improvements at Llynclys crossroads and will be putting them forward to the government as major schemes we want to progress with.

“This shows how seriously the government is taking the road network and I am confident of getting the right people around the table for high level talks to progress it.”

Councillor Davenport added that the dualling work would provide a huge business boost to the region.

“I have vowed to do all I can to get this scheme funded and it would provide a huge boon to businesses in the region.

“Not just Oswestry, but Shropshire, Powys, North Wales and the wider West Midlands.

“Road connections that are reliable and modern are vital in attracting major employers to places like Shropshire.”

He added: “I did see there was a five-vehicle crash on the A5 yesterday (Sunday) as well and I am looking for information about it and how it was caused and wish anybody involved the best and hope they are okay.

“I am keeping a record of these incidents so I can present facts to highways bosses.”
