MORE THAN a hundred young children turned up to a rugby day which helped to raise thousands of pounds on a day which commemorated the life of a former volunteer.

The mini section of Mold Rugby Club held the latest annual Paula Stobie Memorial Charity Day on Sunday, raising an impressive £3,150 for Alder Hey Children’s Charity.

Rugby clubs from Mold, Wrexham, Denbigh and Ruthin attended the event which featured competitions for children across six different age groups – all of whom were wearing odd socks to mark the occasion.

The Mold Under-10 age group organised the occasion to continue paying tribute to Paula Stobie, a mother who volunteered in her son’s age group in the Mold RFC mini section before sadly passing away four years ago.

David O’Malley, Chair of the Mini section, who also coaches the U10 players, was delighted with the money that was raised.

Speaking after the event, he said: “It was great to see all the children from four different clubs come together in the centre of our first team pitch to mark the day in memory of Paula.

“We watched the Wales versus Australia game in the clubhouse beforehand and then the players went out to try and replicate what their sporting heroes had done on the pitch in Japan earlier that day.

“All the kids enjoyed the day’s rugby and that’s what’s great about keeping them active and taking part in sport”.

This year’s fundraising efforts began last month when the U10 coaching team completed the 10-mile Tough Mudder obstacle course at Cholmondeley Castle on September 7.

Parents also helped to raise even more money on the charity day by making and selling various treats as well as holding a raffle.

Alder Hey Children’s Charity is an independent registered charity which provides vital funds to help make Alder Hey a world-class, patient-friendly hospital which can make a difference to the 275,000 patients and families who visit every year.

Since October 2013, the Charity has invested £25million into the new hospital, funding a range of life-saving medical equipment and facilities that are making a real difference to families every day.
