A dedicated and caring paediatric nurse, praised for ‘going above and beyond’, is the latest winner of the 'Health Hero Award' at Gobowen's Orthopaedic Hospital.

Rachel Harris, paediatric recovery nurse, won the monthly award for the work she has done to support children who are having surgery at the hospital.

She received two nominations from Dawn Willmore, recovery sister, and Madeleine Good, a fellow paediatric recovery nurse.

Dawn said: “Rachel puts in so much hard work and effort in to the service provided for paediatric patients.

“She has recently got in touch with a charity called Teddies for Loving Care (TLC) and Shropshire Freemasons to get a donation of teddy bears to give to children who are undergoing surgery.

“She has also organised gowns that are more suitable for children.”

Madeleine added: “She consistently finds new ways to improve experience for children who come.

“Rachel goes above and beyond in her role – she’s an extremely dedicated and very caring nurse.”

The 'Health Hero Award' is awarded each month to members of staff who go the extra mile.

Rachel was presented her award by Mark Brandreth, the hospital’s chief executive.

She received a special badge and certificate, as well as a fruit and vegetable hamper from Box of Goodness.

Rachel said: “I am so honoured and overwhelmed to be the latest winner of the 'Health Hero Award' – I know so many fantastic people who deserve this, so to have received it is a huge shock.

“I’m lucky to work in a team who have encouraged and supported me to implement positive changes to the Paediatric Recovery area and enhance patient experience.

“I really do love my job where I’m able to work with such amazing colleagues and patients. Being recognised and receiving this award is just an added bonus.”

Mark said: “The thought and care Rachel shows towards our patients is inspiring.

"Talking to her, and to her colleagues, it is clear that she has a wealth of initiatives and ideas up her sleeve to make their time in hospital more comfortable and pleasant.

“She should be very proud of what she’s achieved, and I’m delighted to announce her as September’s 'Health Hero' winner.”
