A PRIMARY school in Oswestry has closed for the day after a gas leak broke out on the site.

The Meadows Primary School in Harlech Road was closed on Tuesday morning to staff and students after the leak was discovered.

Parents of pupils have been notified.

Wayne Griffiths, Wales and West Utilities gas emergency service manager for Oswestry, said: "We were alerted to reports of a smell of gas at Meadows Primary School in Oswestry at 6.30 this morning (September 24) and immediately sent an engineer to the scene.

"On arrival, our engineer found a leak on the internal pipework in the school and isolated the pipe, making the area safe.

“As the pipe is not part of our network, we advised the school that it will now need to contact a gas safe registered engineer to make any necessary repairs.

“If anyone ever smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak, or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should call us on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help, day or night.”

The school has apologised for any inconvenience caused.
