Oswestry first XV kicked off their season with a huge victory over Newton-le-Willows on Saturday.

An unbelievable performance by the Eagles saw them score a total of 16 tries as they eased past their Merseyside-based opponents.

Oswestry were quick out of the blocks and had a try, courtesy of Tom Henry-Jones.

The visitors managed to hold out for 10 minutes after the third try, before a move started by the Oswestry backs was rounded off by captain Andrew Smith – his kick was converted by Finton Grogan.

Oswestry were full of confidence and from the restart, Owen Wear ran at the opposition to start a move which eventually found Nikola Nikolov who scored a try, which was again converted by Grogan.

Fletcher Owen-Youens was next to charge over the line to score a try, before Nikolov scored his second of the afternoon – both tries converted by Grogan.

Mike Mhute was next on the scoresheet before Henry-Jones got his second.

Oswestry then had a lapse in concentration and allowed their opponents to get themselves a try.

In the last few minutes of the opening half, Nikolov scored his third, which Grogan convertedsending the sides in at half-time with the score at 52-5.

Newton were more determined and hung on, but after 10 minutes of play Oswestry broke the second half dead lock with Nikolov getting his fourth try. Grogan converted a seventh try to take the score to 59-5.

Moments later, Mhute took off on an excellent solo run to get forward and find Mike Davies who scored the side’s 10th try of the day. Converted again by Grogan, the score was 66-5 to Oswestry.

Harri Jones managed to cross the try line to score another try converted by Grogan.

Nikolov scored his fifth try of the day soon after, with Grogan once again converting the try making the score 80-5.

Newton pulled another try back but failed to convert it.

Iwan Ellis, Mhute, Henry-Jones and Connor Blair added another try each, with Grogan converting three of these to make it 106-10.

The result means Oswestry sit third after their first game, with a game in hand over the top two sides.

The first team host Liverpool University on Saturday, while Oswestry second XV host Wallasey in a cup game.
