AN OPPORTUNITY to discover more about autumnal moths will take place later this month.

A moth evening will be held at Prees Heath Common Reserve on Friday, September 27 from 7pm onwards, and a moth morning the following day from 8am.

This will be a unique opportunity to discover the world of autumnal moths that live on the heathland.

A light trap will be used to catch the moths in the evening, and the trap will be opened the following morning to find and identify the moths before releasing them.

Species that may be found include the impressive Poplar Hawkmoth and the beautiful Merveille du Jour, a master of camouflage when resting on lichens.

Special attention will be given to see if the very rare migrant Clifden Nonpareil, also known as the Blue Underwing, is found.

The evening is part of National Moth Night, when moths are recorded at many locations throughout the UK.

The event is free to attend, but contact warden Stephen Lewis on 07900 886809 or at phwarden@sky.com for more information or, in the case of bad weather, to check if the event is still going ahead.

Meet on the access track opposite the Steel Heath turning off the A49 and wear clothing appropriate for the weather.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.
