A Llanfair Caereinion man has been rewarded with a Rising Star Award by the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund.
Alun Roberts, who has prostate cancer, has been raising awareness of the serious illness: to get men like him to go to the doctor’s before it’s too late.
He was praised for giving back to the services that supported him.
His grandson JJ Downes, a Caereinion High School pupil, has raised £2,000 for the Lingen Davies appeal after shaving off his curls in January.
Jane Trudgill, fundraising officer, said the charity is “very proud” of Mr Roberts adding that his achievements will make a “huge difference” to people affected by cancer in Mid Wales, Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin.
She said: “We cannot thank our supporters enough for helping us to reach this challenging target. The charity’s next target is to raise £105,000 to fund two Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) Endoscopes – vital equipment used in the diagnosis of lung cancer. Because we are fortunate to benefit from high levels of community support, such as we see in north Powys, we aim to fund this equipment before the end of 2019.”
