This year’s Ellesmere Flower and Produce Show was slightly quieter than usual but its organisers have said that it will ‘definitely be back next year’.

Ran by the Ellesmere Gardeners Club, the popular event – now into its 35th-year – is a highlight of the town’s summer calendar and attracts visitors from all over the county.

Chairman Verna Roberts, who started the show with friends in 1984, thinks that the change in date for this year’s Ellesmere Carnival will not have helped the lack of entries as the show usually takes place at the same time.

“The show is a different week to the carnival this year, that won’t have helped,” she said.

“The weather has affected entries too.

“But the standard of the entries we have had, have been great – especially in the floral art.

“We still use some of the trophies from the original farmers show that started in Ellesmere in 1905.

“I’d like to say thank you to the tradesmen and people of Ellesmere who have been very good with donating gifts this year. They’ve been very supportive.

“We do this for the people of Ellesmere and visitors from the surrounding areas.”

And committee member Alvina Dawson added: “It is a bit disappointing the lack of entries but we just have to keep going.

“We will definitely be here next year.”
