Llanidloes Croquet Club is celebrating a cash boost from the town’s Co-op to buy new equipment.

Zoe Brandon, Llanidloes Co-op member pioneer, said it was “lovely” to be able to present the club with cheques for £450. The money was raised by customers, members and colleagues at the Llangurig Road store.

“The club is a new venture and has such positive beginnings. This adds so much to our community, making the best of an otherwise inactive space immediately without great expense,” she said. “Croquet equipment is expensive and this money will go towards a new set of balls and mallets, enabling an additional game to be played every Tuesday at Llanidloes Tennis Club.”

The club’s membership has grown since it was formed in April. Janet Crisp, club chairperson, said: “Croquet is giving people who can’t play other sports the opportunity to learn a new skill in the open air. It’s tactical and competitive, social and is good for health and wellbeing and spans generations.”

n The club meet on Tuesdays from 2pm and Thursday from 6pm at Llanidloes Tennis Club, Llangurig Road.
