Sandbach United 4

FC Oswestry Town 0

A DISAPPOINTING afternoon for FC Oswestry Town saw their 100 per cent win record in the North West Counties Football League Division One South come to an end on Saturday after a heavy defeat at Sandbach United.

Town were taken apart by their hosts who scored two goals either side of half-time, resulting in their first defeat in the 2019/20 campaign.

William Goodwin was the star of the show for United as he scored a hat-trick, while Thomas Powell's goal helped them to a well-deserved win.

Matt Burton's side showed glimpses of good football throughout the afternoon, but struggled to break down the Sandbach back four who stood strong against the free-scoring Town side.

The opener came after eight minutes of play when a stray backpass was intercepted by Goodwin who rounded the keeper and passed into an empty net for his first of the day.

Goodwin then turned provider as he sent his side on the counter-attack and found Powell who slotted home to double the team's lead.

After the break, Goodwin got his second of the day with a towering header fired into the net to make it 3-0.

The in-form forward was not finished there however after he stepped up to take the penalty awarded for a foul on Powell.

Goodwin held his nerve and fired into the net to make it 4-0.

Town are in action again on Monday (today) when they face Vauxhall motors (kick off 3pm).

St Martins 2

Stockport Town 3

DESPITE leading at half-time, St Martins suffered a third defeat in a row at home against Stockport Town on Saturday.

A trio of second half goals for the visiting Stockport men meant the Saints were narrowly beaten to confirm their third loss of the season.

Paul Moore's side looked in good form for most of the afternoon, but a handful of important saves from the visiting keeper Alex Gorst meant they could not draw level.

It was a great start for the hosts when Dave Easthope put them a goal to the good after capitalising on a defensive error before rounding the keeper and scoring in the open goal.

Stockport grew into the game throughout the half and almost drew level when Kiarno Samms' header was kept out by the crossbar.

Moments later, Easthope nearly doubled his tally when he too struck the crossbar.

Gorst kept the deficit at just one goal on the stroke of half-time when he produced a fine save to deny Brendon Price.

Things were level early in the second half through Jesurun Uchegbulam who found some space in the penalty area and fired his shot into the net.

Saints regained the lead after three minutes however; Matty Shaw clipped a nice ball to the back post for Ross Murphy to head home.

St Martins held the lead for a while, but Stockport drew level with 16 minutes remaining when Kyle Foley rounded off a counter-attack with a good finish to make it 2-2.

Momentum was in favour of the visiting team and they were given the opportunity to go 3-2 up when the referee awarded a penalty in the 76th minute.

Uchegbulam stepped up and doubled his tally for the day and gave his team the one-goal advantage.

Saints pushed for an equaliser in the final 10 minutes, but they were unable to find a breakthrough and fell to a 3-2 defeat.

St Martins will look to get back to winning ways on Monday (today) when they travel to Cammell Laird (kick off 3pm).

Stone Old Alleynians 4

Ellesmere Rangers 0

AN OUTSTANDING second-half solo performance by David Ablewhite was enough to give Ellesmere Rangers their sixth straight defeat of the season.

Rangers remain rooted to the bottom of the table after Ablewhite scored four goals in the second half to give the hosts three points.

It was another disappointing afternoon for the Ellesmere side who struggled to make things difficult for their hosts.

Ablewhite's first came shortly after half-time when he broke through the defence to meet a pass in the area and shot across goal into the right-hand corner of the net.

Moments later, the midfielder was on hand to score the second of the afternoon with a well-struck free-kick beating the keeper.

Ablewhite's hat-trick came when he met a great cross from William Bailey out wide and headed home to make it 3-0.

He rounded off the win for his team with a fourth goal in the 88th minute to take the three points.

The struggling Ellesmere Rangers side will be in action again on Monday (today) when they host Abbey Hulton United at Beech Grove (kick off 3pm).
