COUNCIL chiefs have been called upon to have several trees examined - after one unexpectedly crashed down on a car minutes after its owner had got out.

The Leader reported on Friday how a tree fell from a resident's property onto a car in Pwll Glas, Mold, blocking the road.

Deborah Edwards and her daughter Medi, who live in the road, had a lucky escape as they had left the parked car just 10 minutes previously.

She told the Leader on Wednesday that the car had been deemed "a write-off" and that she had to find a new one.

Mrs Edwards described her car situation as "a minor nuisance" and said she is "eternally thankful" that nobody was hurt in the incident.

But now she and several other residents have spoken of their concern over the road's other trees, particularly one in close proximity to where the other fell.

Zoe Ellis-Moore, 48, said: "It is a bit scary, you never know when they could come down. "I would like to see the council look at them, just to be on the safe side."

Ann Neale said the incident on Friday had come as a shock, as a large section of the branches had crashed down over her garden. She said: "It came down right over the bench where I usually sit with my grandchildren. "We were not outside when it came down but we heard a big bang. I thought someone had crashed through the wall."

After the tree fell, Flintshire Council officers attended the scene to clear the road and remove the tree.

Mrs Neale, 69, said: "The council workers that came out were excellent - they really worked hard and the weather was atrocious for them. "The tree damaged the cables in the road. Scottish Power were amazing as well."

Speaking of the large tree standing next to where the other had fallen, she said: "I think it should come down."

Mrs Edwards told the Leader: "The trees here are all very old and they're massive. "There's a lot of anxiety, as far as I'm concerned, about them. "I think it would be nice if the council came out and examined them, just to be on the safe side."

She said some of the trees had grown so large, they also blocked out a lot of light to some of the homes in Pwll Glas, adding: "I don't want them all chopping down. The canopies are huge - I just think they need to be maintained."

Speaking of the large remaining tree specifically, she said she believed the council were investigating the possibility of removing it.

She explained: "There's not a great deal of earth there given the size of the tree, which is concerning.

"It has to have lost some integrity when the other fell.

"The road is so busy with all of the mums with buggies who walk up and down it and people going to the dentist - anyone could have been in the road at the time and we're very grateful that nobody was hurt."

Flintshire Council was approached for a comment.
