MORE than 100 golfers got out onto the course to take part in the 2019 Captain’s Day at Oswestry Golf Club.

Captain Mick Dearing was given a great reception by the members and guests, with players not only from Oswestry, but also from Llanymynech and even as far afield as Hampshire.

A day full of golf saw the men battle it out in a flag competition, before the ladies took to the course in the afternoon for a 9-hole stableford contest.

After the competition had ended, the members and guests gathered at the clubhouse for the presentation by Mick to the winners on the day.

As captain, Mick organised the day, with the help of his wife Loren, who he was quick to thank.

“The Captain’s Prize is one of the highlights of the year for the incumbent captain,” he said.

“The tradition is that the day is always about fun, so we tried our best to stick to that theme.

“To keep the fun running, we placed a refreshment point halfway around the course where beer and wine – which is normally not permitted on the course – was supplied.

“My wife Loren manned the refreshment point along with the help of some of the wonderful volunteers from the ladies’ section at the club.”

The main prize winners on the day were Rob Laurence with the men’s competition, ladies competition winner, club president Rachel Wigley, and captain’s guest prize winner Nick Cluloe – current captain at Llanymynech Golf Club.

There was a voluntary donation bucket on hand at the drinks stall for Macmillan Cancer Support, which is the Captain’s Charity for 2019.

All contributions made on the day have gone towards the running total being raised this year, for the charity which is very close to Mick’s heart.
