A real ale trail returns to Oswestry this weekend.

Organised by The Lions Club, the event will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and include eight town pubs – The Fox Inn, The Griffin, The Bailey Head, Ye Old Vaults, The Cricket Club, The Plough, The Black Gate and The Unicorn.

It will be raising money for the Veterans Appeal at the Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen.

Brian Willis, who is helping to co-ordinate the fundraiser, said: "One of the main objectives for this event is to provide a weekend where people can travel to pubs or other venues of their choice in Oswestry within easy walking distance to sample beers which they have not tried before.

"The venues have different characters and choices of beer to suit all tastes.

"Music is arranged at some of the pubs for those who like some entertainment which adds to the experience while some are quieter to suit the tastes other others which hopefully will cater for a wide cross section of people."

He continued: "Also we must not lose sight of the fact that the event’s primary purpose is to help raise money to provide a purpose built unit to enhance the treatment of those amongst our society who fought for our country in various military conflicts around the world and have suffered injuries as a result."

The Veterans Orthopaedic Centre Appeal aims to raise £1.5 million to expand on the hospital's current provision by providing a dedicated environment for the care of veterans.

It was launched in conjunction with Lieutenant Colonel Carl Mayer, an orthopaedic surgeon who is a servicing officer in the British Army.
