KEEPING active is important but for some people in Powys moving about isn’t so easy.

Cutting toenails can be a difficult challenge that can result in some people feeling isolated or lonely, and unable to leave the house without being in pain.

A nail cutting service offered by Age Cymru Powys helps people carry on with their daily routine without discomfort.

Now the charity is appealing for volunteers to come forward and spend time cutting and filing toe nails.

For many people like 82-year-old Mrs Bumford, from Forden, the nail cutting service makes a big difference to their lives.

“Where would I be without the volunteers?” asked Mrs Bumford.

“You can’t fault the service here. I’d be stuck without it.”

It means that she can get out and about without being in pain thanks to volunteers like Ann Hilditch, from Middletown.

She enjoys dedicating her free time to help regular clients such as Mrs Bumford feel comfortable.

“I’ve worked with the elderly for over 30 years and I know there is a definite need for the service. It’s nice to be able to come along and do it.

“I come here before my shift because I enjoy it and you feel like you let people down if you don’t come.

“It’s a simple service to cut nails but it makes such a difference to people. We just need more people to help us.”

The service is growing across Powys and Age Cymru says it needs more volunteers to cope with the demand.

Foot health practitioner Yvonne Bufton says volunteering brings a sense of purpose through giving back to the community.

“I think it’s absolutely brilliant. If you’re outgoing and enjoy people’s company then its such a nice thing to do, it’s so rewarding. Just spend a couple of minutes with each client, and they feel special, and they leave as happy bunnies. They always come back for more.

“It’s quite an intimate thing, they also divulge quite a bit to you and if they mention that they’re struggling financially, we can help them with their benefits and make sure they’re getting the right benefits. Also we help them if they’re struggling with respite because their partner’s ill and they can’t get the time off to rest. It’s pretty good.”

Service user June Taylor, 71, from Welshpool, suffers from arthritis. She says having her toes done is one less thing to worry about.

“They keep an eye on your general health, they always check your medication and everything,” she said.

“Life would be difficult because I do have trouble reaching to cut my toenails. It would be difficult and it’s something that I don’t have to worry about now.

“They all do a tidy job on your feet.

“It’s a very worthwhile thing, and if it’s something that you’re able to do and if people have got free time, then why not. People complain that they’re bored, why complain when you can do something. I do craft that’s my excuse!”

Run by Age Cymru Powys, the service helps people with impaired eyesight, reduced mobility because of arthritic changes, or an inability to reach their feet for physical or medical reasons.
