Councillors in Oswestry have voted to see what discussions there are to be had with Shropshire Council concerning the management of Brynhafod Field.

The move comes after a motion from Councillor Jay Moore to investigate the possibility of using the field, which is near Cae Glas park, for a dog agility park for walkers and trainers.

At the Amenities Committee meeting on Wednesday, councillors heard a response to the motion by Cllr Moore from Clare Fildes, interim head of culture and heritage at Shropshire Council, which stated its opposition to using the park for dog training.

She said: "Due to the use of the park by a wide range of people, many of whom may not be keen on dogs, we would not suggest that Brynhafod Field is dedicated to dog training."

Ms Fildes added that there has been a previous negative incident with a dog trainer in the park and they had been asked not to use it, but suggested an old tennis court that could be used if fenced off.

Cllr Moore then proposed that Oswestry Town Council enter into a discussion around potentially taking this site at the top of the park and it was agreed to do so.

Meanwhile, councillors also agreed unanimously to support Cllr Chris Schofield's motion for the council to provide funding towards the creation of memory bags at Oswestry library.

Cllr Schofield told the meeting: "It came up at a previous heath group meeting that the library were running out of memory bags so I thought they could be helped by us – we’ve all been touched by dementia."

Around £1,000 will be used from the free resource budget to fund the bags, with Cllr Schofield adding that the commitment should come as Oswestry is a dementia friendly town.

Councillors requested further dementia friendly sessions.
