Pupils from Year 10 at the Marches School in Oswestry enjoyed an exciting careers day.

The day involved 32 volunteers from 18 businesses and saw an assembly talk from Ian Davies from Atlantic Mavericks. He is rowing the Atlantic with three crew members in December. Ian brought in the boat, which students enjoyed climbing on and looking inside the tiny cabins.

Other activities included interactive workshops delivered by National Citizenship Service, Department for Work and Pensions, Glyndwr University, University of Law, Aberystwyth University, North Shropshire College and a speed networking event.

The event encouraged students to talk to visitors for five minutes at a time to learn about their role. Companies kindly giving up their day for this were Higher Horizons, Bentley (who brought in two cars), BT, Tute Education, Aico, Hunter Bevan, Royal Navy, Field Studies Council, Harper Adams and Atlantic Mavericks.

Meg Murphy, careers adviser for The Marches School commented: “It was a great day enjoyed by students and volunteers. I think it is so important that pupils are able to engage with employers, ask questions and gain an understanding of the wide range of jobs and opportunities available to them.

“We are so grateful to all the companies that are involved in these events and really appreciate the time they take out from their busy roles to make a difference to these young people."
