AS THE race to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is quickly approaching the finishing line, and with only two candidates now remaining – did you know that one of them has links to Shropshire?
The man at the forefront of the race – Boris Johnson – has ties to the county after his first marriage took place in West Felton.
He married Allegra Mostyn-Owen on September 5, 1987 in a ceremony at St Michael's Church in the Shropshire village, followed by a reception at her nearby family home, Woodhouse.
The couple met while studying at Oxford University in 1984, but their subsequent marriage did not last as after just six years of marriage, they were divorced in 1993.
Johnson now goes up against Jeremy Hunt to become the next Conservative leader and Prime Minister.
The pair have battled their way to being the final two candidates and they will now face votes from all members of the Conservative party, with the result being due in by late July.
