Chris Davies has confirmed his intention to stand in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election.

Former MP Davies was removed from his seat this morning after a recall petition for the constituency, triggered by a court case in March, was successful.

He said in a statement: "I am naturally disappointed with the result. What happened was my fault and no one else's. I sincerely apologise to all the people of Brecon and Radnorshire - and now it is absolutely right that they have their say about whether they would still support me to be their Member of Parliament in a by-election.

"I hope they do, and look forward to regaining their trust and building on the progress we have made over the last four years.

"Finally, I would like to say thank you for the many, many messages of support I have received and I look forward to campaigning over the coming weeks."

Some 10,005 people signed the petition, well above the 10% percent threshold - 5,303 people - needed for a recall.

Davies received support from Tory leadership hopeful Jeremy Hunt this afternoon, who said Davies was a "decent and honest man"

"Whatever the rights and wrongs of his expenses claim I have only ever know Chris Davies as a decent and honest man and a very diligent local MP," he said.

"My thoughts with him and his family today."

Meanwhile, Brexit Party chairman Richard Tice has confirmed his party's intention to contest the seat.

"The sheer scale of the vote to force a recall and a by-election shows how strongly the level of dissatisfaction with politics in the country is rising up the agenda," he said.

"The Brexit Party will be contesting the forthcoming by-election. It is clear that people of this county want to change politics for good."

Earlier today, Plaid Cymru suggested they would be open to a pact with the Welsh Liberal Democrats in order to avoid potentially splitting a remain vote, something which Welsh Lib Dem leader Jane Dodds seemed to distance herself from.

"We're very clear we're going to campaign as Liberal Democrats. We're not looking at anything that's different to that," she told the Press Association.

A spokesman for Welsh Labour said: "The recall result is another huge blow to Chris Davies' credibility to serve as Member of Parliament. This is a mess all of his making.

"The Conservatives must not drag their feet. They should listen to the wishes of the voters of Brecon and Radnorshire, call an immediate by-election and let the people hold them to account."
