RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 1,974 prime lambs to 310.3ppk / £121; 134 cull ewes and rams to £134 and seven prime cattle to 260ppk / £1,323.45.

New season lambs:

There was a much brisker trade on the week with the average and SQQ up approximately 12ppk.

Good types were again in keen demand, with lighter and standard weight seeing a vast increase in the trade.

Light lambs: 233.3ppk by Cwmni Ty Nant and £72 by T E Rowlands, Tyddyn Du.

Standard lambs: 310.3ppk by G M Thomas & Son, Cae March and £121 by the same vendor.

Seven heifers were forward, ranging from 510kg to 555kg.

Hitting the 260ppk mark was a 17m Limousin heifer from J H & S W Burns & Son, Dan y Deri.

The heifer weighed in at 510kg, achieving £1,323.45.

Regular vendor Tudur Edwards, Brithdir, had a 22m British Blue heifer sold for 250ppk, realising £1,309.88.

The overall average of the heifers was 230.8ppk.

BEEF trade was slightly lower, although demand was still good .

A larger show of cull cows met with a firm demand, while lambs met another good trade.

MESSRS Morgan Evans & Co report an entry of 1,428 lambs, 20 old hoggets and 425 cull ewes and rams.

Lambs met a fast trade again, with all types achieving excellent prices.

Fewer hoggets and cull ewes were around, selling to a solid trade.

RUTHIN Farmers' Auction reports sales of 48 store cattle to £1,100.00; 71 calves to £390; five OTM cattle to £1.40 per kilo; 19 cows with calves at foot to £1,860.00; 12 dairy cattle to £1,280 and 145 ewe and lamb couples (298 head) to £138.00.

Calves (auctioneer: Dafydd Parry):

There were 71 calves forward, consisting of all breeds, and good quality was about.

Topping the prices was a 2 month old British Blue bull calf achieving £390.

The same vendor had a consignment of 7 British Blue calves ranging between 3 weeks old and 10 weeks old selling, from £260 to £390.

There were some strong British Blue calves about, with a 7 week old selling for £350, a 4 week old bull calf for £350 and a heifer calf also achieving £350.

A 6 week old Limousin bull calves realised £365.

Limousin heifer calves topped at £305 for a 7 week old.

Of the younger Limousin calf entries, a 2 week old Limousin bull calf sold for £250.

Two Aberdeen Angus calves, aged 3 and 6 weeks old, both sold for £235.

Amongst the top prices were 4 week old Charolais x calves at £355.

Friesian bull calves achieved £60.

As with previous few weeks, many more calves are expected over the next few weeks.
